On April 19, 1775, tension between the American colonies and Great Britain had reached its breaking point as fighting erupted at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. These battles marked the beginning of the American Revolution, where the colonists sought freedom from King George III of England and Parliament. After fighting for years to gain their independence, the American colonies won the war. Even though the colonists faced several disadvantages during the American Revolution against the British, the determination of the soldiers, knowledge of the land, assistance from the French led the colonies to victory. During the mid-1760s, Great Britain was drained in debts due to the French and Indian War. This resulted in the passage of the punitive Coercive Acts in 1774 and pushed the two sides closer to war (Boston Tea Party).† This shows that the colonists were not afraid to fight for their rights. Later on, after the Boston Tea Party, Parliament passed laws known as the Intolerable Acts, closing the Boston Harbor and tightening the British control over Massachusetts. The addition of taxing the colonists and not responding to the colonists’ wishes led to a war between the American colonies and Great Britain called the American Revolution. Many believed the colonies did not stand a chance against the British army throughout the war. America’s Continental Army was filled with civilians from different colonies that never fought combat before in their lives, while Great Britain had the strongest military in the world at the time. British soldiers were properly equipped and trained to fight for their country, whereas colonists had no form of training or experience on the battlefield. During the American Revolution, the colonists w ere always seen as the underdogs who would never have the capability to win against Great Britain. Despite the colonists had several disadvantages against the British military; the determination of the American soldiers was one of the reasons why the colonies won the American Revolution.
